The Western Australian government has announced that plans for the redevelopment of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC) are moving forward, with the project entering the Project Definition Phase.
This marks a significant step towards transforming Perth’s waterfront into an iconic precinct that promises to boost the state’s economy and create numerous job opportunities.
Built in 2004, the PCEC is currently Australia’s oldest convention centre that has not undergone major renovations.
The proposed redevelopment aims to create a world-class convention space capable of attracting major business events to Western Australia.
Key features of the redevelopment include:
- Improved connectivity to Elizabeth Quay
- A new public realm featuring an outdoor theatre on the Swan River
- New waterfront facilities and dining venues
- Significant refurbishment of the existing convention centre to increase capacity
- Development opportunities for a premium hotel and residential apartments
- Commercial and innovation spaces
The state government has allocated $16.6 million to advance the proposal through the Project Definition Phase.
This phase will involve collaborative efforts between the government and the joint venture of Wyllie and Brookfield, who currently lease the PCEC until 2039.
Premier Roger Cook emphasised the project’s potential to create a new tourism and economic hub for Perth.
“The redevelopment can showcase Kings Park and the Swan River while providing new waterfront facilities, housing, tourism and hospitality venues, and thousands of new jobs,” Cook stated.
Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the economic benefits of attracting business events to Perth, noting that business tourists typically spend up to five times more than average tourists.
As the project moves into the Project Definition Phase, further work will be conducted to ensure proper scoping and costing before final agreements are reached.
This phase is crucial for defining the project’s parameters and ensuring its feasibility.
The redevelopment of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre represents a significant opportunity for Western Australia to enhance its position as a premier destination for both leisure and business tourism, while simultaneously driving economic growth and job creation in the region.
