The Prime Minister, Western Australian Premier, and WA Transport Minister have marked a significant achievement in Perth’s infrastructure development with the completion of the elevated rail structure for the METRONET Victoria Park-Canning Level Crossing Removal project.
This historic upgrade to the 131-year-old Armadale Line represents the most substantial improvement ever undertaken on this route.
The project aims to enhance safety, reduce traffic congestion, and improve travel times while creating over 4,300 jobs for Western Australians.
The project has already yielded positive outcomes for the community:
- Removal of six level crossings at key intersections
- Construction of four kilometres of elevated rail structure
- Development of five new elevated train stations
- Creation of six hectares of new public open space
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasised the project’s importance, stating: “As a heavy lifter of the nation’s economy it is critical that we see benefits flowing back into Perth and Western Australia.”
WA Premier Roger Cook highlighted the transformative nature of METRONET, stating: “Our elevated rail along the Armadale Line is changing the face of the south-eastern suburbs, delivering new public open space and the quality modern facilities local communities deserve.”
The project includes:
- Four separate viaduct structures totalling four kilometres in length
- Seven kilometres of new track laid
- Construction of new stations at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington, and Beckenham
Additionally, the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link is being delivered concurrently, providing the first east-west rail connection between the Mandurah and Armadale train lines.
State Member for Victoria Park Hannah Beazley expressed enthusiasm for the project’s community benefits, stating: “I am thrilled to see how much new space has been opened up for the community. We’re planning to deliver some incredible facilities in the new public open space, which will create a more vibrant and active community for all to enjoy.”
As the project progresses, it promises to reshape Perth’s public transport landscape, offering improved connectivity, reduced congestion, and enhanced community spaces for residents and visitors alike.
