The Western Australian government has launched a public consultation phase for the Bentley Redevelopment Project, a major urban renewal initiative set to transform a 30-hectare site in Bentley, just 8 kilometres southeast of Perth’s CBD.
The draft Bentley Redevelopment Scheme and Master Plan, now open for public comment, outline a vision for a vibrant, inclusive community that aims to significantly boost the housing supply in the area.
The project is expected to deliver between 800 and 1000 new dwellings, offering a diverse mix of housing types to cater to various community needs, including social and affordable options.
According to the draft Master Plan, one in seven homes across the precinct will be dedicated to social and affordable housing.
The development will primarily focus on medium-density residential housing, including single-detached, semi-detached homes, and terrace housing.
Some medium-high density options are also proposed, with low-rise apartments up to four storeys and medium-rise apartments up to 6 storeys.
The Western Australian Planning Commission has already approved DevelopmentWA’s Stage 1 subdivision application, which will create 46 residential lots and two development sites.
On-site works for this initial stage are expected to commence in early November 2024.
Lands and Housing Minister John Carey emphasised the project’s significance, stating: “The Bentley Redevelopment will provide a major boost to the long-term housing supply of Perth — seeing potentially between 800 to 1000 new homes created across the site, including a mix of social and affordable housing options.”
The development plans also prioritise community spaces, with approximately 12 per cent of the site designated as public open space.
These areas will feature various recreational facilities, including playgrounds, sports courts, and community spaces to foster an active community environment.
Victoria Park MLA Hannah Beazley encouraged local participation, stating: “I encourage all residents and stakeholders to provide their feedback, ensuring that the final plans reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community.”
The public comment period will remain open until Saturday, November 16, 2024.
DevelopmentWA will host two community information drop-in sessions in October, with details to be published on their website soon.
Following the consultation period, all feedback will be carefully considered before the finalisation of the Redevelopment Scheme and Master Plan, anticipated by mid-2025.
