Hanson Australia, a subsidiary of Heidelberg Materials, has announced a significant expansion in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) market.
The company has entered into a conditional purchase agreement to acquire the premixed concrete business of the Elvin Group, the largest concrete producer in the Canberra region.
The acquisition includes:
- Two concrete plants in the Canberra region
- A concrete laboratory
- A sand-blending plant
- An equipment and accessories supply outlet
The Elvin Group currently employs 85 employees and contractors, who will be integrated into Hanson Australia’s operations.
Phil Schacht, Chief Executive of Hanson Australia, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating: “We are very excited about adding the Elvin Group’s concrete operations to the Hanson Australia business, as it strengthens our footprint in one of the largest regional markets in Australia.”
This move aligns with Heidelberg Materials’ strategy to strengthen its presence in core markets. René Aldach, Member of the Managing Board of Heidelberg Materials responsible for Australia, commented: “With this bolt-on acquisition, we are expanding our vertically integrated market position and bringing our expertise in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation to one of the largest regional markets in Australia.”
The Elvin Group, founded in 1970 by the late Tom Elvin and his wife Leonie, has been a cornerstone of the Canberra concrete industry for over five decades.
Leonie Elvin, along with her children Vic and Craig Elvin, expressed gratitude to their staff, contractors, suppliers, and customers for their support over the past 54 years.
The proposed acquisition has already received informal merger clearance from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
The transaction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, marking a new chapter for both Hanson Australia and the Elvin Group’s concrete business.
This acquisition represents a significant development in Australia’s construction materials sector, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape in the ACT region.
