The long-awaited METRONET Ellenbrook Line is scheduled to officially open on Sunday, December 8, 2024, marking a significant milestone in Perth’s public transport infrastructure.
This 21-kilometre rail line will connect Perth’s north-eastern suburbs to the city centre, fulfilling a major election commitment by the WA government.
The new line will feature five stations: Morley, Noranda, Ballajura, Whiteman Park, and Ellenbrook, branching off from the existing Bayswater Station.
Commuters can expect journey times of approximately 31 minutes from Ellenbrook to Perth, with shorter durations from intermediate stations.
Under the WA government’s fare structure, train rides will cost $4.16 with a SmartRider, with free travel on Sundays and for school students throughout the week.
This pricing strategy aims to make public transport more accessible and affordable for residents in the north-eastern suburbs.
The $1.65 billion project, jointly funded by the federal and state governments, has generated around 6,500 jobs during its construction phase.
It represents a significant investment in Perth’s public transport network and urban development.
Regular passenger services will commence on December 9.
Premier Roger Cook emphasised the transformative impact of the new rail line on suburban communities, stating: “This METRONET project will transform the north-eastern suburbs, providing affordable or free public transport on a world-class rail network for tens of thousands of local families.”
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti expressed her excitement for the communities that have long awaited this development, describing it as a “game changer” for reliable and affordable transport options.
The Ellenbrook Line’s opening marks a significant step in Perth’s public transport evolution, promising improved connectivity and accessibility for residents in the city’s north-eastern corridor.
