AUSTRALIA — Sydney’s budding athletes will soon have enhanced opportunities to pursue their Olympic dreams, with two new sports and recreation facilities advancing to the construction phase.
These developments, located in the Green Square and Alexandria communities, promise to provide world-class sports amenities and public spaces.
The second stage of Gunyama Park is set to expand the site with an additional 6,300 square metres of green, open space.
This will include a skate plaza, a playground, and an amenities block, complementing the existing award-winning pool, recreation centre, and outdoor synthetic football pitch.
The project will also plant over 150 new trees, contributing to the City of Sydney’s goal of achieving at least 27 per cent tree canopy cover by 2050.
Additionally, a new tree-lined road will provide more than 25 parking spaces to the east of the park.
The construction of Gunyama Park is expected to be completed by early 2026, subject to weather and other conditions.
Meanwhile, the Huntley Street Recreation Centre will feature four multipurpose courts designed to accommodate a variety of sports, including basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics, and badminton.
The facility will also incorporate sustainability features such as solar panels and water tanks to align with the City of Sydney’s net-zero emissions target by 2035. Construction is anticipated to finish by mid-2026.
Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO, emphasised the importance of these facilities, stating: “Our communities love sport and we want to provide as many spaces as possible for training and play.
“As more people move into our area and density increases, it is vital we provide these public facilities so our residents can maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.”
These projects are expected to meet the growing demand for sports infrastructure in Sydney, offering local residents more spaces for training and recreational activities.
